Bio Arctic’s handling of personal data

This is BioArctic AB’s approach to handling personal data in social media channels. Below, the company’s use and processing of personal data in these channels are described, as well as the importance of being cautious when sharing information.

Purpose of using social media

BioArctic is actively present on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn, YouTube and X. We use these platforms to communicate and share news and knowledge about the diseases that BioArctic is researching, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lewy body dementia, ALS, and our research on the blood-brain barrier.

Processed personal data

Social media platforms are built on users creating and sharing content. By interacting with other people on social media pages, users contribute to creating added value for themselves and others. At the same time, this means that personal data (both one’s own and others’) is spread to varying degrees.

BioArctic processes this data to communicate with individuals who contact us, as well as with others interested in the company’s content. We handle data by reading, responding to, hiding, and sometimes deleting comments and posts on our social media channels.

If you choose to publish content (e.g., write comments, share posts, send direct messages, upload pictures) on any of our pages, your personal data will be processed. This may mean that your name becomes visible and clickable or that your interests are logged.

Your personal data is always stored and used by the specific service where you have published them (e.g., Facebook). BioArctic has no control over how these providers handle your data, as this is entirely regulated by their terms and conditions.

Some personal data is particularly sensitive and is protected more strictly under the GDPR. For example, health conditions can be such sensitive personal data.

You always have the option to delete what you have posted (e.g., comments) and stop liking/following BioArctic’s accounts to reduce the extent of personal data processing that occurs when you interact with BioArctic’s accounts.

As a user, you also have the option to block or restrict BioArctic’s accounts.

Transfer to third countries

Within the EU, the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) provides a unified protection for personal data and privacy. Since July 2023, there has been an agreement between the EU and the USA, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, to ensure that the processing of personal data to third countries meets the EU’s data protection management requirements.

It is good to know that law enforcement agencies in the USA may access personal data from the provider of the social media service. These authorities are primarily interested in data that can help prevent terrorism.

We encourage you to be aware of these risks when choosing to share content on social media and to act with caution.

Personal data and marketing on social media platforms

Sometimes we conduct marketing activities on social media. The purpose of advertising on these platforms is to reach a broad audience and increase the spread of our content. Marketing is also useful when we want to reach specific target groups that we don’t normally reach through our other regular communication channels.

Ad campaigns can have different goals, such as driving traffic to a website, increasing the number of views on a video, or increasing the spread of our content. We can also use ads to promote or inform about events such as seminars or lectures.

To make the ads more relevant to the recipients, we create target groups based on the information that the social media platform has collected about the users. This means that we profile the users, often based on age and geographical location, but it is necessary for our communication to be precise and effective. For example, it may involve targeting ads in a specific language to the country or countries where that language is spoken.

In our communication about diseases and disease treatment, it may happen that we target ads to people who follow BioArctic on the social media platform where the advertising takes place, or people who have liked a post or watched a video for at least 15 seconds.

BioArctic does not market information about prescription drugs to the public.

As of January 2022, it is not allowed to target ads based on personal data that may be considered particularly sensitive, such as health, race, ethnicity, political affiliation, religion, or sexual orientation, according to Facebook’s guidelines.

By using marketing on social media platforms, BioArctic does not have access to personal data that can be linked to individual people. All processing of personal data is carried out by the provider of the social media service.

If you visit our Facebook page, you can click on the “Page Transparency” section and access the “Ad Library” where ongoing and completed ad campaigns are displayed.

For more information on why certain ads on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger or Threads are shown to you and how you can influence this, we recommend visiting Meta’s help pages.
